China has become the world's biggest market for new energy vehicles for two consecutive years as well as the world's biggest auto market for eight years in a row with home brands accounting for over 50% of domestic market. "In recent years, China's auto industry has grown rapidly with sound profitability due to timely seizing the opportunity of the new normal of economic development and vigorous implementation of self-reliant brand strategy. In particular, China's own automobile brands are rising rapidly, becoming another Chinese name card besides high-speed rail and nuclear power," said Sun Guorui, a law professor at Beihang University BUAA in an interview with CIP News.

The latest statistics revealed that new energy vehicles are emerging among domestic brand automobiles. 651,000 new energy vehicles were sold in the first eight months this year, a substantial increase of 47% compared with last year. Chinese auto brands such as BYD and BAIC BJEV ranked among the world's top 10 makers in auto sales volume.

"BYD has been adhering to brand strategy and therefore succeeds in going global, "said Long Mei, Assistant of General Manager of BYD. Since 20 years of establishment, BYD has built 30 industrial parks around the world. Thanks to brand development and independent development, BYD has achieved corner overtaking in the field of new energy vehicles. In 2015, sales volume of new energy passenger vehicles of BYD took up 11% of the global market, outperforming many famous international brands. In 2016, BYD rose to the top in both domestic and oversea markets for new energy vehicles. BYD has ramped up its presence by selling new energy cars in 50 countries and regions and 240 cities including the U.S, Japan, Britain and South Korea. He added that as of now the company has established a research and development system for new energy vehicles featuring five countries and seven regions.

With the rapid development of new energy vehicles of domestic self-reliant brands, to which foreign famous auto brands also held out the olive branch. Long before Ford announced the partnership with Zotye Auto to set up a joint venture to make new energy cars.  More interestingly, Daimler again went north to sign the cooperation framework agreement with BAIC BJEV right after going down south to join hands with BYD to develop Denza.

In fact, in the past five years, under the support of a series of policies such as "Made in China 2025" and "The 13th- Five Year Development Plan on Automobile Industry", China's self-reliant auto brands are entering a golden age of development and have made a transition from "bringing in" to "going out". As global auto market is shifting its center to China, many emerging Chinese proprietary auto enterprises are attracting the influx of capital, technology and talents.

"Enhancing innovation capability and developing self-reliant brands are vital to China's auto industry. Great efforts shall be made to promote the internationalization of the industry, thus enabling more Chinese auto brands to go global," Xu Heyi added.by Zhao Jianguo
