According to Miluo City records, in the Jianwu period of the Eastern Han Dynasty, on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month, people living along the Miluo River threw rice dumplings wrapped with Ruo leaves into the Miluo River, which precipitated and evolved into a unique Dragon Boat Festival custom along the Miluo River. Zongzi also became a unique food for the Dragon Boat Festival.

As the source of Dragon Boat Festival culture, the history of making zongzi is more than 2000 years in Miluo City of Hunan Province. The angle of the Miluo Zongzi is like a cow's horn, and the surface of the rice dumplings is glossy. The rice used is local "sweet scented osmanthus glutinous rice", which is a high-quality glutinous rice variety inherited from the traditional planting area of Miluo. The amylopectin content is more than 99%. The Ruo leaves used are from the local wild grass plant Ruo bamboo, with fragrant smell.

Up to now, the annual output of Miluo Zongzi is nearly 40 million, and the annual output value is nearly 80 million yuan. Glutinous rice, zongzi leaves and stuffing constitute the three main raw materials of the rice dumpling, which are related to the quality of Zongzi. Miluo City has built three major glutinous rice planting bases in Changle, Sanjiang and Luojiang, with an area of more than 34,000 Mu and an annual output of nearly 28,000 tons of high-quality glutinous rice. At the same time, high-quality Zongzi leaves planting bases have been established in Miluo Baitang, Quzici, taolinsi and other townships, covering an area of nearly 100,000 mu.(Courtesy of the IP Protection Department of CNIPA)
