The China National Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA) hosted a meeting online with the Intellectual Property Office of the United Kingdom (IPO UK) on November 23, 2021 to celebrate the 25th anniversary of cooperation between the two offices. CNIPA Commissioner Shen Changyu and IPO UK Chief Executive Officer and Comptroller General Tim Moss congratulated each other on the 25-year's successful cooperation. The two sides reviewed the remarkable fruits scored in the past 25 years and expressed their willingness to enhance pragmatic cooperation in the future.
Shen said that since the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) in 1996, the two offices have carried out practical and in-depth cooperation, which facilitated the building of an IP ecological system and improvement of business environment in the two countries which truely benefit IP users both from China and the UK. Although China only established the IP system for about 40 years, the IP work in China is developing at speed thanks to the high attention paid from the Chinese government. China has acceded to major international IP treaties. With stricter IP protection, IP awareness in the whole society is on the rise, and innovations are booming. IP is becoming the most important part of improving the property rights protection system and the greatest incentive to uplift economic competitiveness in China. China is willing to work with the UK to actively respond to development needs, address new issues raised in the new era, and provide more IP solutions to sustainable development in the world.
Moss said that during the past 25 years, both offices have constantly deepened collaboration and achieved fruitful results. Such kind of cooperation will continue in the future. IPO UK pays great emphasis on cooperation with CNIPA. By hosting IP symposiums regularly, the two offices keep exchanging experience with each other, discuss frontier IP issues and listen to voices from the stakeholders, which contributed to the progress of IP undertakings of the two sides. In the future, IPO UK is willing to further cooperate with the CNIPA on climate change, public health, new technology to promote economy development and bring benefits to more and more IP users.
The two offices updated work progress and signed the 2022 work plan in the meeting. The two sides further shared views on patent and trademark examiner exchange, 2022 China-UK IP symposium and other topics.
